Biofeedback May Be Just What’s Needed to Help Treat Chronic Conditions

March 30, 2018 – Today’s guest blogger, Marcus Clarke, has a degree in psychology, a masters degree in health psychology and has worked within the National Health Service in the United Kingdom, as well as private organizations. Clarke started psysci a psychology and science blog where he writes about the latest research into biofeedback therapy.

If you are unfamiliar with the term biofeedback, it is a process that gives us the ability to have a greater awareness of our biological selves with the goal of being able to control those mechanisms within our bodies that we normally don’t believe we can control. Biofeedback machines today help us to quantify that which we previously thought we could never control: sweat gland activity, heart rate, muscle contractions, and more.

Today the field of biofeedback therapy presents an alternative method to drugs for the treatment of many conditions. Biofeedback machines can help identify the best therapeutic approach for non-invasive and safe treatment that anyone can do on his or her own. Different types of biofeedback machines are used today to treat many medical issues. When combined with conventional stress-reduction techniques and anxiety therapy, these treatments can help self-regulate the body’s response to chronic and acute stress and anxiety-related disorders.
